Review: working on Upwork, moving from webdev to gamedev and virtual reality

It was a great year for growth, opportunities and even a 10K month! I am still working with JavaScript and this past year used a JavaScript game library for making games called Phaser.js to make a game to be played nation wide in Canada..yes!

It was a great year for growth, opportunities and even a 10K month! I am still working with JavaScript and this past year used a JavaScript game library for making games called Phaser.js to make a game to be played nation wide in Canada..yes!

This year I got top rated status on Upwork and then moved back to 80% because of a dishonest client who kept changing the scope of the deliverables/project. More on that later! Basically on Upwork it’s important to not focus on clients who either don’t know what they want or are just scoping the market for prices. Simply because time is precious.

It was also a time where I formally moved into Game development, yes! With a specialization in Unity and VR for education and training

I also got to teach an amazing and gentle class in Brunei! I really enjoyed it! And wish all the learners great success in their endeveours 🇧🇳

After Packt’s refusal to pay upon the initial completion of 3 chapters of a JavaScript book that I was signed onto do with them, I took it upon myself to finish the book and sold 115 copies! I learned facebook marketing along the way as well as setting up a landing page and list building. So it actually turned out good for me. The reason why they redacted the contract was because the reviewer said the chapters were like MDN web docs. This sounded ridiculous then but seeing how good the MDN docs on JavaScript are I am now flattered. Ofcourse being accussed of plagiarism is never nice, I checked online plagiarism checkers to verify if they could be even a tiny bit correct, but it seems like the reviewer was just a grumpy grouch. Also since Packt was shady AFK from the start (only paying upon completion of 3 chapters. The company is based out of UK but 90% of their staff is in India) I had decided not to share with them the coding exercises till I got at least an initial payment

On the education front I worked with great teams at Skills Union and Code Youth. I also got an opportunity to be part of a team in which I get to create tech content using gamifying and game based learning techniques. More on this later but it’s very interesting.
